AR is an extraordinarily late reader. There are several reasons for this. She is the youngest in her family, she is petit and cute, and she is great at compensating in this one area in particular. She was often embarassed that BW is reading books far above his grade level and she couldn’t read easy books. It has slowed her down quite a bit on her projects.
Ms. JW caught her with an Amelia Bedelia book the other day. AR was pretending to read it during silent reading. Ms. JW has worked with her in the past to unravel the sounds of letters. This time AR kept at it and pushed through. One of the stories was about Amelia Bedelia making a lemon meringue pie. When AR successfully completed the story, she and Ms. JW baked a lemon meringue pie. We all daintly devoured it using the good silver desert forks.
AR is attempting to sound out more letters and read a bit more without help. We are finally on our way to independent reading. Hurray!
