“Lost Wax” casting method – AV

The first thing that is done is to carve an object out of wax that is going to be molded. Tubes of wax are a fixed, at least one to the top and one at a 45• angle out the side. These become important as a channel for the wax to be removed and the bronze to be poured into. Once that is done, it is placed into a metal cup that is filled with plaster and dried.  To remove the wax, the whole cup is heated so the wax can be melted and flow out.  This is done in a kiln. The channel in the top is opened and metal is poured into this hole. Once the metal is cooled and the mold is removed, the only thing remaining is the piece.
